About Dr. A.M.A. Azeez

Dr. Aboobucker Mohamed Abdul Azeez (1911–1973) was one of Sri Lanka’s most distinguished educationists, civil servants, and community leaders. Recognized for his vision and dedication, he played a transformative role in uplifting the Muslim community through education and social reform.

As one of the first Muslims to enter the prestigious Ceylon Civil Service, Dr. Azeez held several key administrative positions before dedicating himself fully to education. In 1948, he was appointed Principal of Zahira College, Colombo, where he led a new era of academic excellence and holistic development.

Dr. Azeez firmly believed that education was the foundation for progress, and he worked tirelessly to expand opportunities for higher education, professional growth, and social mobility—especially among underprivileged communities.

The Formation of YMMA (1950)

Recognizing the need to unite and empower Muslim youth across the country, Dr. Azeez took a historic step on 30th April 1950 at Zahira College, Colombo.

On this day, he brought together multiple independent Young Men’s Muslim Associations and established a unified national body:

The All Ceylon Young Men’s Muslim Association Conference (ACYMMAC)

With the participation of 17 YMMA branches, this marked the beginning of a coordinated and impactful youth movement in Sri Lanka. Dr. Azeez became its first President, guiding its early direction and purpose.
